Communicating with public audiences is not the same as lecturing to academic students or colleagues. Keep in mind that your audience most likely will not be taking notes or underlining your handouts.
A few tips:
- Think and talk in themes. Your audience should grasp the totality and value of your subject matter.
- Distinguish ideas from facts. Present ideas that are supported by facts. Your task is to deliver the big picture and instill a desire in listeners to ask questions and obtain more specific facts.
- Use active verbs and vivid nouns.
- Be concise. Do not give long-winded explanations.
- Avoid using scientific nomenclature and jargon, since most public audiences will not be familiar with these terms.
