Although scientists are increasingly engaging in education and public outreach projects related to their research, historically these activities have not been widely viewed as a core responsibility of scientists. Outreach activities traditionally have largely been the realm of science education and communication professionals, such as museum educators and public information officers.
AAAS and other scientific organizations, along with NSF and other funding agencies, are encouraging scientists to get more involved in activities aimed at public outreach and engagement.
